Peridot is a rare, yellowish-green gemstone that is a variety of the mineral olivine. It is known for its brilliant glow and is the birthstone for August.

      Color:

      • Peridot is best known for its yellowish-green color, but can range from pure green to olive to brownish-green

      • The finest peridot is a pure grass green without any hint of yellow or brown

      • Lower-quality peridot is brownish

      Composition:

      • Peridot is made of iron and magnesium, with iron giving it its yellowish-green color

      • It is often found in volcanic rocks called basalts

      Properties:

      • Peridot has a distinct cleavage and a conchoidal (shell-like) fracture

      • It ranges from about 6.5 to 7 on Mohs hardness scale

      • It has a specific gravity of about 3.27 to 3.37

      Cut:

      • Peridot can be cut in a variety of styles, including ovals, emerald cuts, and cushions

      • Connoisseurs seek out large well-cut intensely colored gems

      History:

      • Ancient Egyptians got their peridot from deposits on St. John's Island in the Red Sea

      • In medieval times, peridot was often confused with emeralds

      • New deposits were discovered in Pakistan in the 1990s
