Hessonite Garnet is a particular grossularite form of Garnet that is most known for its warm yellow to reddish tones.

It can exhibit colors like orange, dark brown-orange, and reddish-brown.

Hessonite Garnet can also occur in other colors like pink and green, but it is most known for its cinnamon-like colors.

Hessonite Garnet is sometimes called the Cinnamon Stone, not only because of its color, but also because it originated in Ceylon, now known as Sri Lanka, the land of spices.

When viewed under magnification, Hessonite Garnet has lesser transparency in various areas. This makes it more distinguishable from gemstones of the same color, like Topaz and Citrine.

Hessonite Garnet is also easier to distinguish because of its manganese content and lower specific gravity compared to other varieties of Garnet.

The name Hessonite is derived from the Greek word ‘hesson’, which means ‘inferior’.

It does not mean that this stone is an inferior stone. It’s only because Hessonite Garnet’s density and hardness is lower than that of most Garnet stones.
