      SMITHSONITE SPECIMEN

Smithsonite is named in honor of James Smithson, the founder of the Smithsonian Institution.

Many photos and a video from all sides of the specimen taken in natural daylight. What you see is what you will receive, no surprises.

ORIGIN : LAVRION MINES, ATTICA, GREECE

Here is a fantastic and rare example of 2 generations of Smithsonite found at the famous ancient Lavrion mines in Greece. First generation is silvery grey botryoidal topped with the second generation of the highly unusual style of crystallization of rice grain shaped crystals. Rice grain crystals are one of the most uncommon and most interesting habits for Smithsonite making it a rare find for collectors. Rice grain shaped Smithsonite crystals are highly sought after due to their scarcity. Although crystals are obvious to the naked eye, specimen requires magnification in order to enjoy the crystal structures and formations. Specimen will look wonderful on display in your collection and will be an interesting and rare addition to any rock and mineral collection. Here is the opportunity to add this delightful specimen from a classic, ancient locality to your collection, do not miss this opportunity.

Most of the famous ancient Lavrion mines are over 2500 years old and have a total length of over 50 kilometers. They were built on 6 underground levels and the entire mining site constitutes a natural museum since more than 680 mineral species can be found to date in the region which comprises almost 12.5% of the known minerals worldwide. Lavrion has aroused the interest of a growing number of mineralogists and amateur collectors due to both the variety and the beauty of its samples. The story of how mining began in the Lavrion district is lost in the mists of early history. Many ancient writers and orators mention Lavrion including Aeschylus, Aristotle, Demosthenes, Lysias, Aristophanes and Strabo. According to Aristotle, it was in 483 B.C when the rich deposits of Maronia (present day Kamariza) were discovered.
