Charoite at its most beautiful. The swirling patterns are due to due to its fibrous crystals being arrayed in complex interlocking patterns. With colorings and markings reminiscent of a piece of fine art, Charoite reminds us of a Van Gogh painting. Wonderful!
Charoite possesses the most wonderful chatoyance or pearly markings in lay mans’ terms. This is what makes it so glorious and unusual.
Charoite geology, geography and history
Charoite has a glorious purple color and rarely a lovely brown color with the unique pattern of swirls, feathers and needles. It may contain patches or stars of black (Aegerine), orange (Tinaksite) and also pods of transparent or white crystals (Microcline Feldspar). The region in which Charoite was discovered is located in the Murun Mountains in Yakutia, Russia. It was found by Russian geologists the Rogovazs in the late 1950s and called’ lilac stone’. In 1978 the name “Charoite” was confirmed by the Commission on New Mineral Species - named after the Chara River near where it is found.
Charoite is formed from limestone by the process of contact metamorphism. Since this is a relatively common geologic phenomenon it is not completely clear why the finds of this stone are limited, but the particular limestone in that area has unique chemical properties as do the intrusive rocks. So far, gemologists have not been able to ascertain the exact chemical/structural reason for its purple color. Charoite is a silicate of complex composition; one mineralogical source describes it as a hydrated potassium, sodium, calcium, barium, strontium, silicate hydroxyfluoride! Try saying that backwards!!
Healing Properties of Charoite: Charoite is the stone of transformation, helping us cope with major changes in our life and follow our intuition in a grounded way so we achieve our life ambitions. Charoite cleanses the aura and chakras, opens our hearts and stimulates unconditional love. It reduces worry. Charoite regulates blood pressure and improves sleep. It heals general conditions of the nervous system. Charoite helps us live in the here and now and supports our understanding that in the realm of all things, we are exactly where we are supposed to be in our lives at that point of time. Charoite is especially good for meditation, rehabilitation/recovery and stress.
Place it on the third eye chakra to improve creativity. Charoite is the stone of the third eye chakra.
