What are salt and pepper diamonds?
When I first discovered salt and pepper diamonds some years ago, I was enchanted by their uniqueness and overawed by their beauty. So overawed, that unbeknown to me, for the entire two hours that I’d been mesmerised by these exquisite stunners, the Indian monsoon had pelted the streets below and they were submerged in a foot of water – how would I ever get home? But did I care - no, I had my new treasures to console me.
They are becoming ever popular. Jewelry lovers adore the irregularity and individuality of the these imperfect diamonds - no two will ever be the same. Most diamonds have flaws known as inclusions that are very faint and often cannot be seen by the naked eye, but these are different, Salt and Pepper diamonds are truly individualistic diamonds with flecks, veins and speckles due to their numerous visible inclusions. In diamond terms, inclusions are blemishes such as black carbon spots, cracks, white spots, feathers or clouds. Once eschewed and even termed dirty diamonds, these are now highly desirable and craved for by contemporary jewellery lovers. Each ebullient gem is a one-of-a-kind diamond never to be seen again. A mini work of natures’ very own art.
