Riesling beryl was initially found by a German geologist in 1840 near a small village in East Germany. The majority of the discovery was presented as gifts to royalty or sold to private collectors, with some notably exquisite pieces even making their way to the British Royal family. This royal connection is one of the main factors contributing to its pricing.
The gemstone exhibits a pale green hue with a warm, golden yellow flash, and it's notably dichroic, displaying both green and yellow colors. This rarity in beryl contributes to its pricing as well.
With a high refractive index of 1.59, this precious beryl showcases exceptional sparkle when cut. It possesses a hardness of 7.5 on the Mohs Scale, a specific gravity between 2.66 and 2.86, and its chemical formula is Al2Be3Si6O18.
Due to its scarcity, Riesling beryl remained elusive until November 2002, when the Everhart family discovered it near Arcuaii, Brazil, while mining for Morganite. A larger pocket of these stones was found in March 2004, but its production remains limited.
The German Riesling beryl, often owned by royalty and the affluent, commands high prices, with some specimens reaching up to $7,000 USD per carat. The larger and more visibly dichroic stones are particularly in demand.
On the other hand, Brazilian Riesling beryl, while still beautiful, is not as coveted and is typically priced around $100 per carat. Dichroic stones hold a premium over those with a more straightforward yellowish-green appearance.
For collectors, the German material holds special significance as the true Riesling beryl. To ensure authenticity and investment value, obtaining a stone with a known provenance is advised. Reputable German dealers can assist in this pursuit, although prices may be steep.
