Madan, in the Rhodope Mountains of Bulgaria, just north of the frontier with Greece, is an ancient ore-miners’ settlement. The history of mining in the Madan region extends back at least as far as the Thracians in the fifth century B.C. where the extraction of lead ore began.

An amazing example from the Madan ore field in Bulgaria consisting of black micro tetrahedral Sphalerite crystals, most of which are sharp with well defined edges and faces and have a fantastic shiny black metallic luster, along with terminated micro Quartz crystals, shiny golden micro Pyrite cubes also present. Specimen is very interesting under magnification as there are numerous features to explore, view the plethora of well formed Sphalerite and spot the micro Pyrite cubes. Colors contrast wonderfully. Although crystals are obvious to the naked eye, specimen requires magnification in order to fully enjoy the range of interesting structures.
