Madan, in the Rhodope Mountains of Bulgaria, just north of the frontier with Greece, is an ancient ore-miners’ settlement. The history of mining in the Madan region extends back at least as far as the Thracians in the fifth century B.C. where the extraction of lead ore began.

A wonderful example from the Madan ore field in Bulgaria which is noted for some unusual crystal habits of Galena. This 'melted' Galena specimen is truly captivating and collectible with its well formed UV reactive Manganoan Calcite crystals which glow under long wave ultraviolet light (see pictures) and minor black Sphalerite.  Specimen is interesting under magnification, view the splendid Galena formations from close up and spot the well formed Calcite crystals.
