Madan, in the Rhodope Mountains of Bulgaria, just north of the frontier with Greece, is an ancient ore-miners’ settlement. The history of mining in the Madan region extends back at least as far as the Thracians in the fifth century B.C. where the extraction of lead ore began.

Here is a fantastic example from the Madan ore field in Bulgaria featuring fine cubic silvery Galena crystals of top metallic luster and UV reactive Manganoan Calcite crystals on the highly sought after black metallic Sphalerite crystals most of which are sharp with well defined edges. Bulgaria is noted for some unusual crystal habits of Galena and this specimen is truly captivating and collectible. Manganoan Calcite crystals glow a delightful sweet bright neon watermelon pink to coral pink color under long wave ultraviolet light (see pictures). Specimen is also very interesting under magnification as there are features to explore such as the wonderful geometric formations, view the well formed Sphalerite crystals and the splendid Galena formations close up, and spot the lone terminated Quartz crystal. Although crystals are obvious to the naked eye, specimen requires magnification in order to fully enjoy the range of interesting structures. Specimen will look great on display in your collection.
