This huge sri-lankan (ceylon) blue/clear sapphire is a collectors oddity for sure. It has a well faceted pear/teardrop design and some pretty unusual characteristics such as the blue hexagonal colour zoning, and some very heavy veils/fingerprints (healed fractures) giving the inside of the gem a wispy or smokey internal appearance.
This gem has been assessed under 400x magnification, Long-wave UV, short-wave UV, refractometer and polariscope and determined to be natural sapphire, heat treated only. These types of veils are uncommonly seen in finished gemstones especially of this size and are magnificent under a microscope. This gem has been used for gemological training around inclusions from sri-lanka and is no longer needed.
