58mm 138ct MARSTON MARBLE cabochon 58 by 35 by 6mm
This is a supreme quality stone - in fact the best you will ever find.
Awesome AAA quality and of course ethically and lovingly mined and manufactured here in the UK.
This stone is an agate stone and has undergone the process of 'agatisation' over the years
“Marston marble” is not actually a marble at all, but a conglomeration of tiny, rare ammonites (promicroceras martonensis and ziphoceras ammonites) from the Jurassic Period, approximately 200 million years old.
This fascinating material was previously used to make grave markers in the local churchyard, but the location of the find was lost for many years, making it a holy grail to fossil hunters and collectors.
Discovered some ten years ago whilst prospecting the rivers around this famous locality this piece of highly fossiliferous stone was embedded in the banking, taken back and prepared. The exact locality within Marston Magna still remains a mystery to this day and try as they might, many collectors have tried and failed to locate probably one of the most famous ammonite associations in history. This piece of marble indicates a major catastrophe which killed and covered over many millions of these ammonites in a single event. The marble which was discovered over two hundred years ago and can be seen in the Natural History Museum in London. Approximately 200 million years old.
