Citrine is the yellow variety of quartz family. The coloring agent is iron. Natural citrines are rare. Most commercial citrines are heat-treated amethysts or smoky quartzes. The name comes from the French word citron, meaning lemon. It occurs in proximity to another gemstone in this family, Amethyst and the two can be found mix together. Citrine Can easily be confused with many yellow gemstones, especially apatite, precious beryl, orthoclase, topaz, and tourmaline.
