Hackmanite is a rare mineral that belongs to the halide mineral group. It is a translucent to transparent mineral with a vitreous luster and typically exhibits a yellow to greenish-yellow color.
Hackmanite is known for its unique property called tenebrescence. This means that the mineral can display a different color under various lighting conditions. When exposed to shortwave ultraviolet (UV) light, Hackmanite can exhibit a deep purple or violet color. However, when the UV light is removed, it gradually fades back to its original yellow or greenish-yellow color. This phenomenon is known as reversible photochromism.
The tenebrescent behavior of Hackmanite is caused by the presence of trace amounts of sulfur (S) within the crystal structure. The sulfur ions can trap electrons, which are released when exposed to UV light, resulting in the purple color. This responsive characteristic has made Hackmanite a popular material in jewelry, especially when cut into gemstones.
Hackmanite was first discovered in Greenland in 1896 and was named after Axel Hackman, a Finnish mineralogist who extensively studied the mineral. It is also found in other locations around the world, including Afghanistan, Canada, Russia, and the United States.
In addition to its use in jewelry, Hackmanite is also of scientific interest due to its ability to store luminescent energy and its potential applications in technologies such as optical data storage and fluorescent lighting.
