some useful ' Ammolite ' information
Ammolite, the opal - like gemstone, is one of the rarest on earth. Although being over 70 million years old they are one of the newest gemstones, granted its status by the 'World Jewellery Confederation' in 1981.
Red color is fairly common, unlike precious opal where red is rarer and the most valued. Ammolite is mostly found in reds and greens with blues and purples being less frequent and therefore more valued. The stones that show brighter color, are less directional and with colorplay, and show three or more colors are the greater in value. Also, as with opal, the type of pattern plays a part in the stones value too.
Ammolite is only a thin sheet and is very rare without its matrix which is mostly limestone or shale, sometimes clay and is often flakey. For this reason it is common practice to stabilize stones by coating / impregnating them with a resin or epoxy, this is a form of treatment, for protection against further deterioration of the stone. All our ammolite items are genuine. They have been crafted and polished using the same techniques as with our opal and many have not been treated or coated unless clearly stated in the above description section.
