Zagi Mountain in Pakistan has provided collectors with some of the finest quality and amazingly gemmy Bastnasite specimens. Typically the species forms in relatively thin blades and was never suitable enough for cutting stones. The new find in Pakistan has produced some very thick crystals for the species, many of which are of gem quality. The stones cut from some of these crystals are extremely rare and highly prized by collectors. They often have some sort of inclusions, and completely eye clean gems are very hard to find. This particular stone is a beautiful, golden orange color gem with a great cut. The stone is only very very slightly included, which is quite impressive for a stone this size. This stone would fill a spot in any rare gem collection, and it appears that the locality might be dwindling as less and less Bastnsite comes out each year. Bastnäsite gets its name from its type locality, the Bastnäs Mine, Riddarhyttan, Västmanland, Sweden. Ore from the Bastnäs Mine led to the discovery of several new minerals and chemical elements by Swedish scientists such as Jöns Jakob Berzelius, Wilhelm Hisinger and Carl Gustav Mosander. Among these are the chemical elements cerium, which was described by Hisinger in 1803, and lanthanum in 1839. Hisinger, who was also the owner of the Bastnäs mine, chose to name one of the new minerals bastnäsit when it was first described by him in 1838.

Responsive seller, which is appreciated. Lovely gem. The only issue was with shipping. I paid for post but it was sent via Fedex. Fedex (of course) charged me illegal fees over a month after delivery! This was why I chose post and not Fedex.
