MAGNESITE SPECIMEN
Magnesite is a mineral with the chemical formula MgCO3. Discovered in 1808 by Sir Humphry Davy, this mineral was named in allusion to the composition, containing principally Magnesium. The name magnesium comes from Magnesia, a district of Thessaly in Greece

A large and wonderful example of botryoidal Magnesite which is an unusual form for the locality where most magnesite is found massive. This rough specimen comes from the abandoned magnesite mine at Vavdos in northern Greece. Magnesite is commonly used to make tumbled stones, beads, and cabochons. With a a moh's hardness of 3.5-4.5 Magnesite can be cut, drilled, and polished to form beads that are used in jewelry-making. Magnesite beads can be dyed into a broad spectrum of bold colors, including a light blue color that mimics the appearance of turquoise. Will be a great addition to any rock and mineral collection
