Natural maw-sit-sit comes from the Mandalay region of Myanmar.
It is often confused with the Nephrite Jade. First identified by the Swiss gemologist Eduard Gubelin in 1963. It was found in the village of the same name; Maw-sit-sit. This mineral is found where Imperial Jadeite is mined in the Tawmaw jade mining area. At the feet of the Himalayas in the north west of Burma.
This mineral is opaque to transparent with veins green.
Maw-sit-sit is also sometimes names “chloromelanite”. Or also “jade albite”. It is not technically Jade.
It is actually a rock, like Lapis Lazuli as the chemical composition comes from multiple minerals. It is composed of several different minerals, including kosmochlor; sodium chromium pyroxene. About 60% of maw-sit-sit is made up of kosmochlor, which is the primary component of both the brilliant emerald green and the dark green-black patches. The other major component is chromium-enriched jadeite, which accounts for about 15% of the total material. Kosmochlor, once known as ureyite, also has an unusual name. It means "green from outer space," since the mineral was found originally in meteorites. The ideal gem cut from maw-sit-sit is a bright chrome-green cabochon. The quality of the green determines the quality to the buyers. And the green colour comes from the very high chromium content.
The Maw-sit-sit is quite tough, due to a Mohs hardness of 6 to 7.
