Description
Curation
Curated by: Harshil Zaveri, Founder & CEO
Description: It's no wonder the color red is used to indicate "stop." Its powerful hue makes you take notice. The same can be said about this magnificent 5.05-carat ruby. Mined from the Montepuez district in Mozambique, it features a beautiful "pigeon blood red" color, considered the finest ruby color. This remarkable color, unenhanced by heat treatment according to the Gem Research SwissLab (GRS), is perfectly saturated throughout the stone. The clarity is also exquisite, expertly showcased in a symmetrical, elongated octagonal step-cut shape that maximizes light-play. This ruby is a rare, collector-grade gem waiting for a setting worthy of its regality.
Gemstone, Origin & Treatments
Species: Natural Corundum
Gemstone & Variety: Natural Ruby
Geographic Origin: Montepuez - Mozambique
Treatments: No Treatments (Unheated/Untreated)
Weight, Measurements & Shape
Weight: 5.05 carats
Measurements (L x W x H): 13.21 x 7.01 x 4.88 mm
Type of Cutting: Faceted
Shape: Rectangular Octagon
Color
Intensity of Color: Vivid to Deep
Shade: Red
Color Award: "Pigeon Blood Red"
Description of Color Award: Macabre, as it sounds, "Pigeon Blood Red" refers to a color category reserved for the finest, high-caliber rubies that exhibit a vibrant and vivid crimson red color. The term is said to have originated in Burma, where locals call the most vivid rubies "ko-twe", meaning "pigeon's blood". It is said that a perfect ruby is the same color as the first two drops of blood from the nose of a freshly-killed pigeon.
Pigeon blood red is the most sought-after color in rubies, surpassed by no other. While these rubies are usually devoid of purplish/pinkish/orangish/brownish overtones, some stones may show a slight purple hue.
While Burma (Myanmar) - particularly the Mogok region - has historically produced the most legendary pigeon blood red rubies, the nomenclature is not exclusive to the country. Other localities that yield fine-quality pigeon blood red rubies include Mozambique, Madagascar, Tanzania, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Vietnam.
Gemologist’s Comments on Color: The color of this ruby is an attractive and highly desirable shade of "pigeon blood red" without being overly dark in appearance.
Transparency & Clarity
Transparency: Transparent
Clarity grade: Loupe-Clean
Clarity description: The stone is completely free from eye-visible inclusions, and no inclusions are seen under 10x magnification
Gemologist’s Comments on Clarity: Such a high level of transparency and exceptional clarity is rarely seen in natural & unheated/untreated rubies, particularly in stones over 2 carats in weight.
Fluorescence
Fluorescence is the visible light some gemstones emit when exposed to invisible ultraviolet (UV) rays. We've described below the intensity and color of the gemstone's fluorescence under long-wave UV light (LWUV).
Fluorescence Intensity: Faint
Fluorescence Color: Red
Special Characteristics
Exceptional Quality: The overall quality of this gemstone is classified as "exceptional". Its unique combination of extraordinary color, remarkable clarity, and superior appearance make it almost impossible to replace.
Vibrant Brilliancy: This gemstone exhibits a brilliancy that is classified as "vibrant." Vibrant brilliancy results from a combination of factors such as skillful cutting, excellent clarity, even color distribution, and a very low degree of extinction.
Superior Cutting: The cut grade of this gemstone is classified as "superior". It has been masterfully cut by our highly skilled gem cutters (lapidaries) to bring out its best qualities and diminish any perceived imperfections. This gemstone is symmetrical, well-proportioned, and has an excellent surface polish. Therefore, it displays the maximum dispersion, scintillation, and fire.
Large Size: The size of this gemstone is large compared to the commonly available sizes in this species/variety, making it rare and highly sought-after.
Gemological Reports
This item is accompanied by the following gemological reports. We will ship the original reports along with the item.
Gemological Institute of America report # 6502020880
The accompanying GIA report authenticates this gemstone as a "Natural Ruby" of "Mozambique" origin with "No Indications of Heating". In addition, the appendix letter associated with the report states "The combination of high degree of transparency, exceptional red color, lack of heat treatment and its larger size make this ruby a notable gemstone" along with a detailed description. GIA issues such letters only to select gemstones that meet their specific "Notable Gemstone" criteria.
At our request, the girdle of this gemstone is laser-inscribed by GIA with its logo and the report number ("GIA 6502020880"). This security feature gives buyers a unique way of linking the GIA report to the physical gemstone.
GRS Gem Research Swisslab report # GRS2023-092141
The accompanying GRS report authenticates this gemstone as a "Natural Ruby" of "Mozambique" origin with a comment stating "No indication of thermal treatment".
The accompanying GRS report describes the color as "vivid to deep red" with a special comment on the appendix stating "This vivid to deep red Mozambique ruby is reminiscent in color saturation of 'GRS-type pigeon blood ruby' (without strong fluorescence)". GRS awards this color term only to select rubies that meet their specific "pigeon's blood" color criteria.
