Pisces Birthstone Guide: Lucky Gems & Their Meanings

pisces birthstonesThose born under the Pisces zodiac sign are blessed with both monthly birthstones and lucky gemstones that nurture their intuitive souls.

Both astrology and gemstones go back thousands of years. Humans have looked down at the Earth’s crystals and up at the stars to seek inspiration or answers for centuries.

The Pisces constellation and symbol depicts a pair of fish connected with a cord, just like the spiritual connection any Pisces can have with one of their many birthstones.

In this guide, we’ll go over the traditional monthly birthstones of Pisces, along with some lucky Pisces crystals that will have you swimming in benefits.

First, let’s go over the basics of what it means to be a Pisces.

What Does Being A Pisces Mean?

If you were born from February 19 to March 20, that means you have a Pisces sun sign.

Some of the positive traits of Pisces include being compassionate, intuitive, and creative. On the negative traits side, some common pitfalls for Pisces include being too trusting, overly sensitive, and prone to escapism.

The sign is mutable, meaning it falls in the transition between seasons — in this case, winter to spring. Being mutable makes Pisces super adaptable, but it may also come with seeming unreliable or unpredictable.

Pisceans often exist mentally between reality and fantasy, which is where escapism may become a problem for them. With proper balance, though, that middle-state of existence can come in handy for creative endeavors.

Pisces signs are some of the most empathetic and emotionally aware signs of all. Being a water sign, Pisces experiences and examines emotions deeply. Plus, being the last sign in the zodiac means Pisces holds the wisdom of all the signs before it.

In ancient or traditional interpretations, Pisces is ruled by the planet Jupiter. Jupiter represents all forms of growth, from intellectual to spiritual. Modern astrologists have assigned Pisces to the planet Neptune, which governs dreams, spirituality, and intuition.

Beyond astrological meanings, planets have also helped us establish our monthly calendar system, which brings us to Pisces’ monthly birthstones!

Monthly Birthstones for Pisces

Traditions relating to 12 birthstones for the 12 months of the year have roots in Biblical texts, though the modern tradition started around the 1500s. The modern list of monthly birthstones, however, was established in 1912, standardized by the National Association of Jewelers. It was then modified in 1952 by the Jewelry Industry Council of America.

With those changes and additions, how many birthstones does Pisces have? It depends on which list you follow, but we’ll discuss six monthly Pisces birthstones below — a.k.a. the February birthstones and March birthstones

So, if you’re wondering if your Pisces birthstone is amethyst or aquamarine, it just depends on which month of Pisces season your birthday falls under.

Speaking of which, amethyst is first on our list.

amethyst gemstone pisces birthstone

February: Amethyst

Is amethyst a Pisces birthstone? You bet! Amethyst is the main February birthstone on historical birthstone lists and modern ones. The gem is a purple variety of quartz. Its shades range from rich royal purples to the soft lavender hues of Rose de France amethyst.

As a healing stone, amethyst is a perfect match for Pisces. The crystal is all about providing inner peace and balance, along with strengthening intuition. It’s also said to help establish solid, healthy relationships, which is crucial to the wellbeing of any Pisces.

Remember how the idea of birthstones have Biblical roots? One of the references is the twelve foundation stones of the Biblical New Testament. In that list, amethyst is the twelfth stone, just like Pisces is the twelfth sign. Neat full-circle moment, right?

zircon gemstone pisces birthstone

February: Zircon

Going further back to older birthstone lists, one of the February birthstones was hyacinth, an outdated term for zircon.

Zircon is a natural stone, though it’s often confused with the synthetic gem cubic zirconia. While cubic zirconia began in the 1970s, zircon is actually the oldest known piece of Earth, dating back roughly 4.4 billion years!

Like Pisces with all its wisdom of the signs that came before it, zircons have stayed resilient through various catastrophic events on Earth.

Spiritually, zircon is helpful to Pisces by balancing all aspects of the self — emotional, physical, intellectual, and spiritual — into functioning harmony.

February: Jasper

The last February birthstone on our list is jasper. Jasper isn’t just one gem, but rather a group of chalcedony stones defined by being opaque and color-banded or patterned. That means there’s a jasper Pisces birthstone color and pattern for any style.

As you know now, staying grounded can be a struggle for Pisces. Luckily, jasper is a super grounding, protective stone, helping these folks keep their feet on the ground while they explore the clouds of imagination.

Adding to this list, though garnet is traditionally a January birthstone, it is also considered a February birthstone.

Now, what are the March Pisces birthstones?

aquamarine gemstone pisces birthstone

March: Aquamarine

If there’s one gem on this list that stands out as the Pisces birthstone, it’s aquamarine. Aquamarine is a variety of beryl, alongside gems like morganite and even emerald, one of the four precious gemstones

Perhaps unsurprisingly given its name, aquamarine has lots of associations with the sea, matching Pisces’ water energy. Remember how Pisces is ruled by Neptune in modern interpretations? Well, one Roman myth says that Neptune, the god of the sea and planet’s namesake, discovered aquamarine on a sea shore after the gem fell from a mermaid’s treasure chest.

Additionally, aquamarine as a Pisces birthstone works to boost the sign’s hope, creativity, and courage.

bloodstone gemstone pisces birthstone

March: Bloodstone

The next March birthstone on our list is bloodstone, also called heliotrope. Bloodstone is often mistaken as a jasper variety. It’s not, but they’re both chalcedony varieties. The classic bloodstone look is a dark green stone with speckles of red resembling blood spatters (hence the name).

In ancient Mesopotamia, bloodstone was used by prophetic intuits to see into the future. This matches the strong spirituality and believed psychic prowess of Pisces signs.

jade gemstone pisces birthstone

March: Jade

Like zircon, jade is an older, historical birthstone. It originates from the ancient Tibetan calendar, a list of gems often called “mystical” or “Ayurvedic” birthstones.

Jade gemstones can actually be either jadeite or nephrite, both of which are quite durable rocks rather than minerals. The traditional (and most valuable) shades are green, often with swirled or mottled patterns. However, jade also comes in other hues like lavender, yellow, white, black, and more.

Besides being a lucky charm, wearing a jade Pisces birthstone ring can bring serenity and harmony, especially in relationships. If you have a Pisces spouse, jade is also the traditional gemstone for the 12th wedding anniversary!

That covers every Pisces birthstone meaning for the traditional monthly side, but what about other lucky Pisces stones?

Zodiac Stones for Pisces

Unlike monthly birthstones, zodiac stones aren’t necessarily set-in-stone. Different astrologers — and even different astrological traditions — may consider various different gems lucky or beneficial to a particular zodiac sign.

Below, we’ll list our picks for the best Pisces stones and crystals. Keep in mind, not every Pisces zodiac stone may be on this list. If you’re a Pisces and feel drawn to another gem that isn’t mentioned, follow your intuition — it’s notoriously strong after all!

That said, what are the lucky stones of Pisces?

color changing fluorite gemstone pisces birthstone

Fluorite

Fluorite comes in many colors, but violet or blue fluorite is particularly good for Pisces personalities that tend to struggle with emotional balance. Rainbow fluorite is also said to benefit Pisces by strengthening their mental clarity and decision-making — a task that can be otherwise difficult for mutable signs.

Overall, fluorite as a Pisces stone helps you feel protected, confident, and spiritually harmonious. It’s also nicknamed the “Stone of the Heart and Inner Truth.”

verdite gemstone pisces birthstone

Verdite

Verdite is a Pisces stone similar to the March birthstone, jade. They’re both rocks, not minerals, widely known for having green coloring. In fact, verdite is often marketed as “African jade,” despite the stones being different. Individually, verdite is a gem mostly composed of fuchsite

Spiritually, verdite represents truth, power, and health. Like fluorite, verdite is said to enhance intellect and wisdom, making it especially beneficial to any Pisces with jobs as authors or positions in academic fields.

rose quartz gemstone pisces birthstone

Rose Quartz

Rose quartz is a pink, often milky-looking variety of quartz. The gem is famously known as the “Stone of Unconditional Love,” perfect for attracting the connection and companionship essential to a Pisces’ emotional wellbeing.

Additionally, rose quartz is said to promote self-love. Many Pisceans absorb other people’s emotions so much, it can affect their own self-esteem. Rose quartz helps offset this, reminding you that loving yourself is crucial to loving others.

staurolite gemstone pisces birthstone

Staurolite

Pisces are a rare kind of person, and staurolite is a rare gem to match. This stone is generally brown, with an external, cross-like, three-dimensional shape created from its crystals twinning at both 60° and 90° — a rare phenomenon! Some even rarer specimens can be color-changing

You may know staurolite by its popular nicknames “fairy stone” or “fairy tears.” The origins of these names tie to sadder events — fairies reacting to the news of Christ’s death, according to legend — but they remain as enchanting as the creatures they’re named after.

For Pisces, staurolite aids their spiritual side by purportedly helping strengthen magic rituals. The crystal is also believed to ease stress and encourage prioritizing self-care.

yellow sapphire gemstone pisces birthstone

Yellow Sapphire

The last stone on our list is yellow sapphire, the Pisces stone in Vedic (or Hindu) astrology. Yellow sapphire is also called Pukhraj and serves as a planetary stone for Jupiter, the traditional ruling planet of Pisces.

As a Jupiter stone, yellow sapphire is said to bring prosperity, good fortune, and strength to any Pisces that wears it.
