Moss Agate: Meanings, Properties, Healing Properties & More

moss agate gemstoneMoss agate is a stone that resembles dendritic agate but differs in its neutral coloring and transparency. Named for their appearance, moss agate stones display multiple green shades in patterns resembling, well, moss!

While the stone sometimes goes by “mocha stone,” these agates were around long before coffee shops. In ancient times, moss agate was known as a warrior stone as well as a gardener’s stone. Nowadays, the stone’s healing powers and symbolism are just as diverse.

Ready to learn more? Let’s start off with some basic facts about moss agate.

What is Moss Agate?

Moss agate is described as a neutral and transparent Dendritic Agate. Technically, the stone is a type of chalcedony. The use of the word Moss Agate was used before a scientific definition for the stone came about, so “moss agate” has stuck.

Most of the time, Moss Agate is found in a lime color. Rarely, red and brown patterns appear on the gem due to corrosion of the iron within the chlorite and hornblende.

Moss Agate is not officially a birthstone, but it is a zodiac stone for those born under Virgo.
