Transparency & Clarity in Gems

Clarity is the term used to describe the quality internally of a gem and the presence of  characteristics on and within a stone.

Inclusions
are characteristics which are entirely inside a stone or that extend into it from the surface. The GIA defines blemishes as “characteristics confined to, or primarily affecting, the surface.” While most of these characteristics are inherent qualities of the rough material and have been present since the earliest stages of the crystal’s growth below ground, some are actually a result of the harsh stress that a stone undergoes during the cutting process itself, or severe heat or dropping possibly as well.

Generally, clear transparent gemstones with no visible flaws are the most valued. Some gemstone varieties, notably emerald and ruby, typically have some eye-visible flaws so the price structure takes this into account. On the other hand, gemstones such as aquamarine, citrine, and topaz are normally eye-clean, and as a result most folk look for the clearer gems in these.

Whilst flaws often have a negative impact on a gem's value, their presence can be evidence that your stone is natural.

Inclusions such as silk often help to prove that your gem is untreated. Inclusions sometimes provide characteristics unique to particular locations of origin such as Kashmir. In addition, some gems are actually valued for their inclusions. An example of highly-valued and beautiful phenomena in colored stones is the star appearance in sapphires and rubies, which results from the presence of intersecting "needles" of the mineral rutile.

Transparency Table

Transparent Objects seen through the stone are seen clearly.
Semitransparent Objects can look slightly blurry when seen through the stone.
Translucent Objects are vague and hard to see. But the effect can be very beautiful.
Semitranslucent or semi-opaque There are parts of the stone where light travels into and is echoed back.
Opaque Virtually no light passes through the stone.

There are different tables everywhere concerning the terms specified - however here is what Wooded Path goes by for defining the clarity within:-

VVS  VS 1 VS 2 SI 1 SI 2 Included
Extra Fine Quality

These gems have microscopic inclusions which are slightly difficult to see under a loupe of       10x magnification.
Very Fine Quality

Small pinpricks are just visible to the scrutiny of the close naked eye. However, the beauty of the gem is not diminished in anyway.
Fine Quality

Small pinpricks and feathers are just visible to the scrutiny of the close naked eye. However, the overall beauty of the gem is still not diminished.
Good Quality

These gems have inclusions which are fairly easy to see to the close naked eye. However, the overall beauty of the gem is still high.
Medium-High Quality

These gems have inclusions which are fairly easy to see under the close naked eye. These inclusions are usually not really visible at an arm's length.
Medium to the lower qualities

Included gems with internal features that range from eye visible to very easily seen to the naked eye.

Finally, every gem should be judged on its own merit. If its color and luster appeal to you, then it has worthwhile properties - no matter what the 'rating' of clarity it holds. Jewelers, designers and collectors are all finding value in natural beauty today to the extent where the standards of the past are simply not applying anymore. The term 'semi-precious' does not exist - as all gems are valued and respected for what they are. People are embracing and loving the natural work in all its shape, color, size and clarity!
