Some named by their origin: Paraiba from Brazil – intense blue, or violet- or greenish blue; Rubellite – a reddish tourmaline; watermelon tourmaline – green on the outside, pink on the inside.

Named after the Sinhalese term turmali, the name given to all coloured crystals on the island of Sri Lanka at the time, some believe tourmaline to be helpful to creative people such as artists, authors and actors.
